One highly effective method for starting a short story is to write an opening hook: a sentence that immediately intrigues the reader. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself.
Dalloway, why is she buying flowers, and is it unusual that she would do so herself? Such questions prompt the reader to continue with interest, looking for answers.
The objective of drafting is just to get words down on the page. As you start to build your short fiction, remember our cardinal rule of care.
You have a finite amount of words, which means each sentence is proportionately more important than in a longer piece. Remember all that time and effort you poured into developing your key emotion? Now's the time to put it to work.
To Boldly Write in the Voice of a Child…
Slowly, little by little, I lifted the cloth, until a small, small light escaped from under it to fall upon — to fall upon that vulture eye! It was open — wide, wide open, and my anger increased as it looked straight at me. Only that eye, that hard blue eye, and the blood in my body became like ice. Nothing is more disappointing to a reader than a beautifully written narrative with a weak ending.
If you have no idea how to end your short fiction, go back and review it up to the penultimate scene, right before everything resolves. Then ask yourself: how would a reader want this story to end? The answer to this involves a combination of what would realistically happen to the characters and what is most impactful. Coming back, he walked through the barroom, where people waiting for the train were drinking.
He drank an Anis at the bar and looked at the people. They were all waiting reasonably for the train. He went out through the bead curtain. She was sitting at the table and smiled at him. I feel fine.
Try using dialogue to end your story, or reveal a twist in the very last sentence, leaving the reader reeling. William Faulkner employs this tactic at the end of A Rose for Emily:. Then we noticed that in the second pillow was the indentation of a head. One of us lifted something from it, and leaning forward, that faint and invisible dust dry and acrid in the nostrils, we saw a long strand of iron-gray hair. Finally, after you write your ending, ask yourself again: Does it make sense based on the preceding scenes? Most importantly, does it make a strong emotional impact?
Because the form is so compact, you have no room for error — so make sure to edit diligently, starting with a reread. Read through your whole story at least three times. Think about the flow of the words, the strength of your key emotion, and the consistency of your plot and characters. Editing for inconsistencies is always a hassle, especially in short stories, where even small plot holes are glaringly obvious.
Revise however necessary to eliminate these. If you end up rewriting substantial portions of your story, remember to keep it consistent with your tone and key emotion. Send your story to someone else for editing, even if you feel self-conscious — it could save you from making major mistakes. More than one pair of eyes is even better! You might ask one friend to look for plot holes, another to edit for spelling and grammar, another for sentence structure, and so on. Story writing means that you emerge with a work of art, and great art should be shared. Make sure you ask for feedback from everyone who receives your short story, from judges to fellow writers, whether published or not.
